Three-time SNL host Paul Rudd starts his monologue revealing his relief that after being upstaged by musical guests before — Beyonce and Paul McCartney, respectively — this time he has a chance to shine. After all, how his guests this time are just…One Direction!
Yes, the 44-year-old actor believes he has it made this time. He says, “This time it’s the Paul Rudd show!” The applause builds but that’s because the five members of One Direction assemble on the stage behind him; Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan. Applause is soon drowned out by audience members who start to scream and swoon. “I love you Liam!” one of them shouts. “Oh, she called me Liam,” Rudd says but soon notices he’s not alone on the stage anymore.
Harry Styles tells him: “We’re not here to outshine you.”
“Yeah,” Niall Horan chimes in, “You do that comedy stuff and we’ll stand back here and pose and blow kisses and stuff.”
But Paul Rudd has a not so secret advantage. After all, he’s Brian Fantana of ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.’ He tells One Direction, “I didn’t want it to come to this. But you brought your boy band. I brought my man band.”
On cue, his ‘Anchorman’ man band — Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy, Steve Carell as Brick Tamland, and David Koechner as Champ Kind — assembles on the stage beside him. After each of them hurls an insult to the boy band, Paul Rudd convinces them they should all work together.
With Will Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy starts singing Starland Vocal Band’s 1970s hit ‘Afternoon Delight’ as they all proceed to harmonize and sing the suggestive lyrics: “Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight / Gonna grab some afternoon delight. / My motto’s always been; when it’s right, it’s right. / Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night…” — and so on with the appropriately suggestive hand signals.
“Now we are Nine Direction!” Paul Rudd, proclaims with triumph. Indeed, it was quite a supergroup. The ‘Anchorman 2′ cast had just recently displayed their a capella vocal talents at the Sydney, Australia premiere of the movie, and once again proved they could hold their own with one of the hottest boy bands on the planet.
