Israeli actress and model Gal Gadot has been cast as Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s ‘Batman vs. Superman.’ See photos of the former beauty queen who competed as Miss Israel in the 2004 Miss Universe pageant and co-starred in ‘Fast & Furious’ movies.
The 28-year-old statuesque brunette will take on the iconic role of the DC Comic heroine Wonder Woman and her alter ego Diana Prince opposite Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman in the sequel movie of Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise, ‘Man of Steel.’
First announced by Deadline.com the news has taken the movie and entertainment world by surprise — judging from initial reactions, a pleasant surprise. Gal Godot has landed the role that has been subject of much speculation as several names as have been floated around.
In contrast Gal Godot is a relative unknown who has been seen principally as Gisele Harabo in ‘Fast & Furious,’ ‘Fast Five’ as well as ‘Fast & Furious 6.’ Hers was always a notably strong female character in the series. Prior to her film career, as Miss Israel, she competed in the Miss Universe 2004 pageant.
Deadline.com quotes director Zack Snyder:
“Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”
Perhaps the best known portrayal of Wonder Woman is that of Lynda Carter in the television series. Surprisingly after so many decades of superhero movies and comic book characters brought to life, Wonder Woman has never had a feature film of her own. But her presence — and portrayal by Gal Gadot — brings hope that she might some day at long last have her own movie, and perhaps also her own franchise.
But now we have an actress, Gal Gadot who will take the famed character from the pages of comic books — and along the way animated TV series, live-action TV series, action figures and other such assorted merchandise — finally, at long last to the silver screen. Zack Snyder’s ‘Batman vs. Superman’ will open in theaters on July 17, 2015.
