Lady Gaga on ARTPOP, Boyfriend Taylor Kinney, Michael Jackson and More on ‘Ellen DeGeneres Show’ (Video)

Lady Gaga opened up about the personal songs on ARTPOP, her new album, her boyfriend Taylor Kinney, her substance abuse problems, buying Michael Jackson’s tour wardrobe, Elton John, and more in an interview on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show.’

The 27-year-old pop music superstar was conservatively attired when she sat for an in-depth interview with Ellen DeGeneres. She wore a plain pink sleeveless dress and had long straight reddish brown hair draped well past her shoulders. The shoes appeared to have platforms and heels of upwards a foot in length and were a signature Gaga touch to an otherwise off-the-rack wardrobe.

Lady Gaga’s album ‘ARTPOP’ did debut at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 as expected but sales fell short of expectations leading to the meme ‘Artflop’ and along with it, some negative reactions to her on Twitter and other social media. She Tweeted in response: “I put so much love into my music, into my shows, I make it all for you. I’ll never understand the overflow of hate sent my way.”

Her appearance on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ marked her first television interview in the aftermath of the album’s release and it was the discussion about Elton John — whom she said was “like a dad” to her — led her to open up about her music as well as overcoming her substance abuse problems. Ellen DeGeneres asked her to comment on his public statements of concern for her and she said “He just worries about me I’ve spoken about it that I’ve problems with drugs and with alcohol in my past. But I’m good. I’m okay right now.”

Asked about her song “Dope” as relates to substance abuse she took the opportunity to speak at length about her music. She said, “‘Dope’ is one of the most personal songs that I’ve ever written. Actually there’s a lot of very personal music on the album. ‘Swine’ is a very personal record, about some of the more unfortunate sexual experiences I had when I was younger.

“‘Dope’ is like that moment at the end of the party when you’ve just had a little too much to drink and you start to think about your mortality and your life. I wrote a song to say I’m sorry to my family, to my fans, to my lover. I’m sorry that I withdrew so much. I guess that’s a really personal thing for me to talk about but here we are.

Lady Gaga continued: “Fame was not the easiest thing for me. Even though my first record was called ‘The Fame’ I really wasn’t in it just for the money and attention no matter what cost. I think the theatrics and the penchant for entertaining people could better be called me being an old soul and somebody that really loves show business. I needed to withdraw from people around me and the world. I am who I am.”

She went on to speak about her wardrobe choices, saying, “I don’t dress any particular way to impress anyone or to market myself for my music. It’s actually who I am. Whether that makes me crazy or insane I don’t know. But it’s my truth. So I’d rather just be open about my insanity rather than allow anyone to think that I’m in a room generating what next thing I’m going to shock you with. That’s not what I do. I’m myself every day and I make records that I hope will touch one fan’s life…I’m not perfect, but I just wanted you to know that. I suffer from that same things that you suffer from and that’s what ‘Dope’ is about.”

Along with the in-depth discussion of her music Lady Gaga also weighed in on the expected celebrity topics such as her boyfriend, ‘Chicago Fire ‘star Taylor Kinney whom she met on the set of her music video ‘You and I.’ She said of him, “He’s a hidden weirdo. He is extremely strange, actually, and we complement each other’s weirdness. That’s actually one of the first things he ever said to me. It’s a Dr. Seuss quote that you find in someone else a compatible weirdness. And it was one of the first things he’s said to me.”

Lady Gaga also reflected upon buying Michael Jackson’s touring wardrobe. She said she believed that clothing absorbs the energy of fans’ enthusiasm and excitement and said, “I really wanted to preserve that for him because it made me feel kind of crazy, the thought of a bunch of rich people each buying one piece. Then they get scattered to the winds and where do his tour clothes go? And I thought if I buy them all I can put them somewhere nice.”

She said she was taking good care of the clothes and that they were “pristine.” When asked she said she would never wear any recognizable items, but said that she had worn a letterman sweater emblazoned with “MJ” and a jacket emblazoned on the back with ‘Stop the Filthy Tabloid Press.” She said, “I don’t go out in them, but when I’m in the studio or if I’m feeling down I’ll wear them because I think he would have been OK with that. But I don’t know.”
